Private Lessons

Is teaching lessons worth the hassle in retirement? What are the pros & cons?

As a retired band director I miss working with the students at school. I've enjoyed working with a few kids teaching private lessons. Not enough to get overwhelmed. The money is not real good and they sometimes don't show up.

Having taught private lessons for years before and after retirement I can attest to the pluses and minuses. Before retirement I was helping my own students with free private lessons. I was scratching my own back as it improved my program. After I retired I did lessons for a variety of schools and with some I spent much of my time being stood-up with no-shows. Working at one school that funded their lessons with scholarships was great. Enjoyed not worrying about hastling kids about payments or showing up. It was very rewarding whether the kids pursued music as a career or not.

I teach at the school during the student’s class and since I’m there I offer to help in between lessons. The directors sometimes
offer to pay for sectionals snd playoffs.

When one of the directors is out I will sub for them which brings in $120 a day; more on Fridays.

I will also occasionally go with the band to a contest or pre-contest which the directors also pay me.

It keeps me busy and involved. The directors have even given me my own “band director” shirt. It’s a great school with great directors, parents and kids. I feel part of something and I need that.
