So, are references included with a resume?

I have found articles online stating, "old fashioned, outdated, don't do it."

I'm curious to see what FA directors have to say.

References are less of a thing right now in the world outside education when everything is being filtered through sketchy and applicant tracking systems.

It is still really important in the world of education because getting a good personality fit is a whole different thing in a school than in an office.

What is the yellow boards thoughts on having the references on the second page? The content of my resume is all on one page but I have my references on the back. Thoughts?

Don't use the back of a page. If you need to go to a second page for your references, go to page 2. Also, in the future try to keep your resume to a max of two pages...a little bit of spill over to a page 3 in a pinch. As your career progresses, you will briefly mention the earlier parts of your career, but the most recent stuff you can go into more detail (a "what have you done lately" type of thing).

In regards to references, research who you’re sending your resume and application to and include references that may be common to you and the hiring person. I recently had an assistant director position that I had to fill. One applicant happened to attend the same university as I did, although it was about 15 years apart. The applicant did not list a single reference from our university. That’s a red flag to me.

I'm guessing your talking about a first year teacher? I mean if you're teaching for 10 years and you are using references from your college days that's a red flag to me.

The person wasn’t a first year, but a recent graduate. I have references from my undergraduate and graduate programs still on my resume, among others, and I’m 20 years in. Those people have been to my mentors and colleagues even after graduation and have been in my rehearsals throughout the years. Furthermore, they are people who are known in our industry and their opinions are trusted & valued. Not a red flag that we have a bond & relationship that goes beyond a degree program.

There are many valid reasons why they may not have had "your" references on their resume.

For example, I attended a well-known metro university about 20 years ago now. There are *two* persons still employed in the Music Ed department at that university that were there when I attended - and both are nearing retirement age. Nearly every single instrument concentration professor save a small few have turned over as well - across brass, woodwind, and percussion.

Fifteen years is an entire career length these days, friend. There may be a really, really good reason that they didn't list your mentors or colleagues - they may not have interacted with them.

Additionally, many people are asked/instructed (by job placement counseling) to put their student teaching supervisor as a reference, and then they use people for whom they've worked as a lesson teacher or drill tech. Real experience usually trumps personal references 9 times out of 10.

When people accuse Texas of having a "good old boy" system - your response is EXACTLY why that accusation still tends to stick. You didn't see the "right" references so you discarded their application.

Heard a great quote a few weeks ago. Along the lines of, "It is interesting that those who find all prior opinion or knowledge to be flawed do not consider that their own position may be full of crap."

Put the references on there.

Yes, put the references with the resume. I never print out the whole application. It's accessible on the computer, but I print out the resumes. It's easier to manage that way.

You want to make the hiring process as easy as possible for whoever is reading your resume. If I have to take extra steps to find out your references, I'm probably going to contact other candidates first who have already provided the information.

As someone that has just sifted through a few dozen resumes, not having references or "references available upon request" tended to place those at the bottom of the pile.

There were other issues: major grammatical problems, chronology out of order, and more.

I've never heard of not putting references on a resume before your post. That seems ludicrous. As someone who may (unfortunately) be hiring a new assistant sooner rather that later, I WANT to see references. I may not contact all of them, but seeing who you put down gives me a lot of insight as to your background and the type of person you might be.

I’m not a Fine Arts Director, but I am a head director that looks at resumes when choosing assistant directors. I prefer to see the references on the resume.
