I recently had drinks with the band staff that replaced me after I retired. As I'm sure you all do....conversation about particular students came up. One student in particular, it surprised me how awful they felt he was...some of the names they would call him (behind closed doors of course) took me by surprise...this student by their standards had been labeled a cancer and they could not wait for him to go. However, I never had any issues with the student...either from a personal level or musical. In fact, I saw him as a potential leader. Made me realize how easy it is for us to dismiss kids as problem children when WE are the ones who aren't connecting with them. Rant over

I'm having this same issue with my assistant. She just can not or refuses to meet most of the kids where they are and grow them from there......

I don't know. Some kids will not give the new director a chance and will be defiant all the way. When I retired, the new guy told me about a kid who was a leader for me, but a trouble maker for him. And, I'm sure we've both taken over programs where a kid was probably great with the previous director but a problem for you and me. Seriously, if it bothers you that much, I'd stop socializing with the new folks and just ride off into the sunset and let it go and enjoy your retirement. That's what I'm doing. Not our programs any more.

When you have taught in one school for a long time the relationships you have had with your kids is hard to break when you leave or retire. You want everything to go well with your successors and keeping your distance from your ex-sudents I think it is vital for their continued success. I try not to catorize students for the new directors. Kids who work hard for one director may my not for another.
