Have you looked at TMEA's job site? There are 733 jobs posted. I am retired, but always like to look. In the 40 years I have been in Texas I have never seen over 400 listed. What happened?

I think many directors chose to wait out the storm of the Pandemic to move to new jobs. As more jobs open up I think it creates a domino effect I used to call fruit basket turnover. With high numbers of people changing professions of course we're going to see an unprecedented number of job openings.

People looking for greener pastures instead of watering their own. Or the Pandemic brought out the worst in an admin and people are looking elsewhere. I doubt the exit from teaching is that out of line from years past, (other than a few retirees that held on a year longer so as to not go out in a Pandemic), but a lot are hoping to find a new building. If the economy crashes all those teachers that thought they were leaving the profession might find themselves running back. Government jobs look pretty secure during a down economy. And some of those retirees might be second guessing the exit if they have secondary investments currently sinking like a rock in a pond....

People leaving for every reason.

I honestly think the majority of teachers who stay are the ones staying in for the right reasons despite what their situation is

But I've been tracking most of the band postings since January and will share here in September. I too want to know what's going on.

I think it's a combination of people stayed in subpar jobs during the pandemic for the sake of hanging onto employment, and are now looking to move on to better situations. The other groups are people who decided enough is enough and are retiring, or leaving the profession.

I'm finishing year 17, and this is the hardest year I've ever had as a director. I think the exodus probably won't stop anytime soon, as nothing problem wise will be solved overnight. Unfortunately kids/schools/staff/bands have some problems that will be sticking around for a while.
