Just pondering the TMEA job board.......

There are lots of postings and many for HEAD jobs say things like "strong admin and community support". But knowing some of the programs, they have very low numbers. So, my philosophical question is, if the community does not have their kids in the program(s), doesn't that mean that the community actually does NOT support the program(s)? The line of logic is that a program can have all of the funds and cheering in the world, but if the community will not support the program by motivating their own kid to be in......does it really mean they are "supported"?

I'm sure many of you have examples for and against this, but I think this is a good talk point: POST COVID world. To be honest, I'm not sure how I really feel about this.....just thinking.

I don't see why not. In fact, if a community provides proper funding and they are cheering the band's efforts IN SPITE of having no children involved in the program, that seems to indicate a foundation of support that is not dependent on numbers, but on quality and school pride. Sounds like a good thing to me.

It's an advertisement. I mean, they're not gonna say, "Bad administration, poor scheduling, apathetic community that only cares about football." Ask the previous band directors, going back a few years, ask around the region and you'll get a better picture.

My position was one of those posted like that last year.

The "strong admin and community support" was because the principal wanted me GONE, and so they were going to "support" the new director. Community support was "the kids want to have a successful program" but by all accounts the program has actually not changed a bit since I left.

The "admin support" was really better interpreted as intrusive meddling and unrealistic expectations, FWIW. Other situations may not be like that, but just make sure if you can you talk to the outgoing director about WHY they're leaving situations like that. Frequently there's a lot to be said that can't be except over a beverage.

The spin put out by almost all schools advertising job openings is pretty fictional.Trust road men, local directors, and previous directors for a more accurate picture of what a potential job would entail. I took my first job out of college relying on info sent out by the college placement office. Big mistake! You must do your homework to find the truth about any job. School advertisements are probably about as accurate as most resumes.

Check out the resume posts on TMEA. These are my favorite because many people are apparently experts of everything. Biggest pet peeves on that board is seeing some who's "specific specialty" is every instrument.

Younger generations don't always type in full academic language in every communication.

"Diamond" may simply be a younger teacher who treats this board as a less formal form of discussion.

YOU do not have the right to ban anyone from the board. If you have a problem with someone's posting, contact Tim.

I've found every post by Diamond to be well within the realms of propriety. Their post in this thread was completely accurate in response to "Old dude" - who posted an additionally accurate and humorous take on resume fraud in one sentence of their remark.

It's time to stop making excuses for people based on their age. Either we can have professional standards and expect folks to meet those standards or we can make excuses for them. I mean those folks that claim teachers don't get paid enough and we don't spend enough on buildings and books and education then make excuses for why "younger" folks work and act and talk the way they do. Is maybe money not the issue in our education system compared to other parts of the world and simply standards and expectations. Are the Canadians and the Swedes and the Japanese "younger" folks lowering their communication standards? And then we wonder why a person with a college degree gets on a discussion board, (presumably to have professional discussions), and then make excuses for their lack of communication ability because of their age? Stop already!

Lower expectations don't end well except for the ruling class.

Whose "professional standards" are we adopting?

Who gets to set those standards?

Fifty years ago, every man wore a suit and tie at all times to work. That was the "professional standard." Should that still be the standard?

At some point standards change. Language changes. And it could be (and has been, repeatedly and successfully) argued that most of those "standards" are based upon white culture, which is why "code-switching" is a thing.

Also, don't cite Japan as a bastion of great "standards." Japan's "cultural standard" is to NEVER challenge your elders, even if they're making a mistake. Young people there aren't allowed to have or express opinions. And there's a correlated reason Japan has the highest suicide rate and lowest birth rate among industrialized nations.

Please leave out the "white man bad" as part of this discussion on standards. Ever been by a Southern black church on a Sunday? They dress! Ever been to a wedding with an African American bride or groom? They dress!

Everyone dressed in the 20's and 30's. Everyone dressed in the 50's and 60's. (those that didn't were incredibly poor and that impacted all races). Courthouses and Pharma reps come to mind quickly as those still dressing for work today (regardless of their skin color). We still make our kids put on dresses and tuxes or dress shirts on stage. Maybe it's time for shorts and flip flops at UIL?

I don't even know what "code switching" is and don't really care. Stop focusing on the outside appearance of individuals (that can't be changed) and focus more on the content of their character.

You don't know what modern kids deal with. You don't know what code switching is. You're comparing church culture to everyday life.

out of curiosity I looked up code-switching. I see it is bilingual folks that switch between the two languages, (my students and spanish speaking peers call this spanglish).

Or changing speech to fit in. I worked for an African American principal that was an English teacher before being a principal. It was a predominately African American student population. Every single in-service or faculty meeting something was focused on writing because that was where the test scores were lowest. The focus was to teach the students to use less street and more formal language in their essays. These were students that were not read to as small kids and had very limited vocabulary. I can't remember the exact terms but basically it was getting the kids to expand their vocabulary. Then the goal was to get them to write using more formal language instead of how they might speak to their friends. This principal eventually ended up with a Ph.D and never once was the activity used to make the kids "white". It was to prepare them for college and careers after high school. Wonder if she knew she was making her students feel bad. Probably not because she loved when they would come back and visit and share their successes because of the education she helped provide.

I know that my formal writing is different than how I might text or even communicate with my wife. Interesting that 15 years ago this was called education and today it's racist. Is it still code-switching if it's a white person or a Spanish speaker or a Russian speaker and have a street vernacular and a business vernacular?

Right, because I'm not a parent of a teenager or anything? Because I haven't spent decades in the classroom? Because I haven't spent decades teaching in the inner city? Because your blanket statement of a suit and tie being oppressive and racist but ignoring the fact that folks of all walks of life willingly put on such attire for any number of reasons. Ever heard the phrase, "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"? I had students that used to dress up for school. Not because whitey told them to do it. But because they saw "dress" as a way out of poverty and into business and wealth and freedom. They wanted to be doctors and lawyers and business owners and engineers. Color never played into their decision because kids don't see color nearly as much as adults, (especially a certain demographic of adult). Success did. I suppose the millionaire African American football players wearing 10k suits as they get on a plane is also because whitey told them they won't be a success unless they do? Good grief!

My horizons are plenty broad. I see people for who they are not what they look like. I refuse to live my life as a victim. I refuse to live my life being shamed, (I've done enough on my own as have most of us to be ashamed of), or ashamed of the way God made me. I refuse to look down on or shame anyone else because of the way God made them. If you choose to be a victim that's on you. Or more likely, as you have attempted to paint me as a broad-brush dismissive category I could guess a few things about you but I won't because that isn't how I work.

Greatest thing about this nation is that nobody is locked into a single path. The poor become rich and visa versa. The uneducated become educated. And please don't tell me how awful this nation is as we have thousands every single day risking their lives and the lives of their families just to get a shot at the American dream. Something must be pretty dang good about this place because NOBODY is busting down the border to get into most other countries around the world.

Stop seeing people for the color of their skin. And stop assuming that "conservatives bad liberals good".

...everything on my resume is true and can be independently verified. Quite frankly, I resent the insinuation that my resume is fictitious, or is in any way "spun" like a school advertisement.
