Don't ask stock questions like "why do you want to be drum major?" We all have stories of being shocked once or twice by a response but you generally don't learn anything and just waste your time. Know your kids and ask them about things that they have done (or not done) in the past. Ask them to explain the process of teaching the first step. Ask them what they want to accomplish and how they think they can do that. Have them write an essay and pull questions from what they wrote. I always hated "judging" dm auditions and hearing the directors ask the same five questions (verbatim) of each student and get the exact same answer. Just my opinion
