How far is "too far" before moving?

When you take a new job, how far away from your current home does it need to be before you consider finding a new place to live?

If your district doesn't give you at least a 9-10% pay raise this year, folks, you've taken a pay cut due to inflation.

And that's before insurance costs, which we all are going to come back in August to find out have increased 45-50%, as is tradition.

Nobody is giving 10% raises and everyone is taking a pay cut due to inflation across every single industry in the country. Even as you see business raise prices they aren't increasing profits. They are just hanging on like everyone else, (especially the building industry, restaurant industry, and raw material folks).

All anyone can really hope for is a big enough raise to cut into the loss. You want to see an unhappy community give all the district staff a 10% raise while all the community folks not working for the school get no raises AND see their medical costs go up. Oof. That would not end well for some board members and superintendents.

the price of gasoline right now. Will it go back down? Who knows.

The last job I had before retirement was a 90 minute commute one way. The plan was to move but any job for my wife was significantly less than the job she had. So I commuted, It was awful. Exhausted all the time , Felt like I never saw my wife and when I did was too drained to to do much around the house. The second year I got a1 bedroom apt and came home only on weekends, I was more rested during the week but the strain on my marriage was real. We did this for one more year before I finally decided I had to retire or I would die from a stress induced heart attack or wind up divorced, Retirement and getting out of that situation saved my life and my marriage,

My fist job was 90 minutes each way. I knew going in that it was a one year situation for me so we didn’t move. Some results from that:
Marriage split up a year afterwards, I’m convinced because of the strain of that year.
I stopped listening to music. I had always had Mahler, Chopin, Holst, Prokofiev etc playing, but 3 hours a day of music when I’m not really listening to it was not what I needed. I switched to books on tape and eventually to The Great Courses, which i did enjoy. Ever since then I almost never turn on music for enjoyment (though I go to concerts all the time).
Medical issues from sitting so long.
Vowed never to commute like that again. I now live 1.3 miles from school and I love it.

....I did that....once. I WAS NEVER "OFF DUTY"! Everyone was knocking down my door til 11:00 some nights wanting something.

wow. That sounds horrible. I get the occasional "I left my backpack in the band hall on a Saturday morning" text on Remind, but nobody comes to my house uninvited. Well once, they came with birthday cake at midnight on my birthday. The security camera whistled at them and they got scared. But one was brave enough to yell "happy birthday! there's cake by your door" before running off.

This is what I’m dealing with right now. I’m always the band director. It sucks.

Would love that but not an option when you live in a large metro area. I live 10 miles from my school and commute 25-40 minutes each way depending on traffic. Sometimes longer.
