Midpoint Salaries

Are you able to negotiate midpoint salaries? I am currently on a 12 month midpoint contract with no stipend. I am only in my 4th year at a 3A and closer to the minimum then the mid-point. Just curious if it is possible to ask for a raise or to negotiate.

It is sad now, I'm be teaching for 23 years and my base pay is only 8k more than the beginner teacher. Is 23 years only worth 8k? I'm sticking out 7 more yrs and getting out.

If what you're doing is pleasing the admin, the parents/community and the students, negotiating is not unheard of, but be realistic and don't back yourself into a corner. In three situations in my time, I asked for "a bit" more and each time was rewarded.

Get to SMBC, State Honor Band Finals, OPS, etc. Then go in and negotiate. I've had some success with past supts. (Not current one)

An Honor Band never helped me negotiate a better pay check except applying at a new school that it meant something to. Believe it or not some schools do not want Honor Bands because it makes band too important. I was fired after my second HB. The superintendent said the kids were taking band too seriously. I've gotten only one requested raise in my entire career and it was after retirement when my last program crashed and burned (after my departure). I was asked to come back and get it back on track. The superintendent admitted that I should have gotten a raise years before. Go figure. Sometimes things have to get really bad before administration gives a hoot.

Agreed...but don't forget that this is usually something you only hear about coaches being able to pull off (even mediocre ones).

I've been to SMC, and State OPS (more than once) before...and by then I thought I had the stroke to try to negotiate if I thought it prudent.

Tried it twice. First time, the salary wasn't bad, but I felt that I would need another $2K in order to take care of the rise in the cost of living. So, when that Sup. asked me, "We want you here. What would it take to get you here?", I told him. Never heard back from him.

Second time with my current district. Similar circumstances. When the Sup. asked, I again asked for $2K more. He called back, and said that he would give me $4K more if I agreed to a 12 month contract. I signed the next day.

Long story longer...sure, you can try to negotiate...but don't be surprised if it blows up in your face.
