Advice on resignation letter

This is will be my first time leaving my current school. I have been offered a new job at another school district.

Being my first change of jobs, I am seeking advice on how to write my letter of resignation to make sure I am paid in full for the summer months from my current district. What information do I need to know or ask for? Can I just state until the last day of my contract?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To whom it may concern:

At the conclusion of my contracted days, (DATE OF END OF CONTRACT), I resign from employment with XXX ISD. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the students of (school).

If you're on a standard 9 or 10 month contract, they aren't "paying you for those summer months" - they're dividing a 9 or 10 month paycheck by 12 (or 13 if you're a first year teacher!) months so you get paid all year. If there are ANY shenanigans about getting paid and you've worked until the last day of your contract, call a real lawyer, not a Legal Beagle.

That being said, if a job - any job, ever - tries to withhold a paycheck because you resigned, call the state and federal Departments of Labor and report them for wage theft. It's the most common form of theft in the United States, and you'll be entitled to damages. Best part is that the burden of proof is on the employer for showing that you unlawfully abandoned your contract and somehow weren't due that pay for those days.

If you work, you're entitled to the pay for that work. Period. Employers can't even withhold a paycheck for failure to return equipment - that's also against the law unless specifically authorized by law or by your permission. They have to seek other recourse for that.

All you need to say is:
You are resigning the last day of your contract.
Thank them for the years you've been with the district.

That's it.

Just make sure you state that you are resigning at the end of your present contract. It never hurts to say you appreciate the opportunity you had to work in the district. I would avoid addressing any negativity you might feel if there is any. Just be pleasant and breathe easy because your next step is already secured. Best wishes in your new gig.

This is my resignation letter several years ago. Some people may tell you to be as short as possible. I kind of think that's cold, especially if you are wanting to leave on good terms. Everyone's different.

With this letter, I respectfully resign my position as ___________ for __________ ISD following the completion of my current contract.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my ______ years of employment in __________ and I am thankful for the support that I was granted from my students, colleagues, and administration. My time teaching in __________ ISD will always be remembered fondly and much of my growth as an educator will be attributed to this district as well.
Thank you for the opportunity to work for ______________ ISD.

This is the template I use. Granted it is a bit wordy, but this will cover your rear end legally as far as getting your full contract pay.

**the format should have transferred, but if it didn't it should be pretty straight forward to snap everything back in place.
