2 Part Time Band Directing positions

One in the morning, the other in the afternoon. Anyone ever done this? Thoughts? Pros and cons? Seems challenging but feasible.

If the two positions are not with the same district, it's possible that you will not get a full year's credit for retirement purposes with TRS and it would simply be a year lost which will cost you at retirement. You also may lose out on other benefits such as healthcare. For a retiree this won't really matter, but for someone who is not yet retired it could possibly be a setback.

I once taught in an out-of-state school district where I taught at an elementary school in the morning and a middle school in the afternoon. One was a .4 position and the other a .6 position, but since they were both in the same district I was considered a full-time teacher and got the benefits as such. That situation would be the best in my opinion having done exactly that.

My mother just did her retirement paperwork with TRS and they mentioned that lots of school districts are hiring recently retired teachers part time. I’ve never experienced this first hand but this might be a great opportunity to hire a master teacher part time.

After completing my required 30 years in Texas I retired in 2005. I rehired as a part time director. I taught 12 more years and paid for my house before totally retiring. It was much more relaxing and gave me more time to prepare for my classes. Did I give up competition? No. 10 more Sweepstakes and 2 more Honor Bands but a lot more fun than the previous 10&2. I'd recommend retire-rehire to anyone who loves teaching! And pension+paycheck is nice.

I'm retired. I work "half-time" for a very small class A school. Great gig for a retired person.
