State Marching Contest

Not to ever take anything away from the kids (don't you hate it when a post starts like this?) but I remember when bands used to march and play at the same time. I've been watching the progression of DCI-ification of bands in this state, and it seems we've actually gone beyond, taking what was a nice, but questionable, practice of standing still for your basic "park and bark" for high points in the music, to now standing still for every technical passage. |
I clocked one band at State who marched and played at the same time a grand total of 28 seconds during a seven-and-a-half minute show. This is just unacceptable, and in no way exemplifies a marching band.
Worse, many judges seem to have been completely fooled by this practice. Sure, the bands play wonderfully, but that's a lot easier when you never move. This is all hidden quite masterfully by the show designers, having one group march complex drill while another section shows off technical facility.
It sure is exciting and fun to watch.
But it's not marching band. Hell, it's not even DCI.
