Kids can do other activities and band. Maybe they can't march, (Football/volleyball), but you can find a way to keep them involved in the program and music. |
I used to have kids that had to work so they did everything in class, performed at the concerts, UIL C/SR, and S/E. They were in an ensemble that didn't have any after school rehearsals and they thrived in band. They were not expected at any parades or Football activities. And believe it or not, when I let 1 or 2 kids do that I didn't have a mountain of kids asking to get out of the marching commitment.
Sure, we want to put a quality product on the field and on the stage but at some point, we have to wonder why we have to do so much stuff outside of class as well. I had football, volleyball, dancers, FFA, 1 Act Play, Softball, Soccer, Baseball, Golf, Tennis, and nearly every club in school represented in my 6A program. And I am really glad I never had to choose as a student because I would not have chosen band.
