I used to do this until about 20 years ago. I realized I was simply enabling this behavior. There was no consequence or accountability. Now they are given a "Written Reflection" on their lack of responsibility. They have to 1) Define what they did 2) Explain why it was wrong 3) Explain how their action negatively impacted others and how a change in the behavior will benefit the group and 4) Discuss ways to correct the action. I do this for all sorts of behavior issues. They then have to take that "reflection" home to be signed and returned the next day (if they don't bring it back, there is a different "reflection" to complete). I provide an exemplar for them to get ideas from, and if they straight out copy it, I'm OK with that. After they finish the "reflection", they have theory work to do. Everyone has their own folder already so they just get it and do the next assignment. We hardly ever have anyone leave anything at home anymore. |
