Is anyone else struggling to keep/improve their clarinet section?

High school assistant director here. I am finding that I am struggling to retain and improve only my clarinet section. My flute and saxophone sections improve and grow with little to no effort. But I only ever keep a few clarinetists from year to year, and they never come in with a good fundamental skill set at the freshmen level. Not sure if I'm expecting more out of them because clarinet is my main instrument, or if clarinet instruction is lacking at the middle school feeders (and yes we do go down twice a week on a rotation to our feeders, but I am given a rotation of all woodwind instruments, not only clarinet sections, and it's a 40 minute class where I spend most of that spoon feeding them the UIL music and warmups that the middle school director don't get to sectionalize with them). Any tips for recruiting and keeping more incoming clarinet players? And maybe some tips for improving technique and tone while still leaving room for marching music, UIL concert music, and TMEA instruction?|
