When I worked in a small school I cleaned all the instruments myself. Thankfully, there was not any dent work.
Crazy as may sound I always enjoyed working on the instruments during the summer. While an acid wash would have been sweet my school did not have a band budget to speak of. I purchased some stuff that was made for this purpose and made do. While I am sure it was not the greatest it did clean the instruments.
For the clarinets, I replaced the corn tenons and the pads. I think that one needs to do their best with what they have. For me, I was happy that I was able to clean all of the instruments from year to year. I think what I miss the most is the insurance company that I had the students use. Since my school was a Title I and the majority of the students could not afford the instruments the school furnished them.
This also gave me the opportunity to put in the proper supplies that the student would need during the year: cork grease, swab, cleaning cloth, valve oil, slide grease, etc.
