I work hard to get home to my family. My family is very understanding of my job, but there are limits. |
I have a lot of early mornings and late evenings, but I make it a point to see my kid at least on one end of the day. If I can't be home for dinner, I'm there for morning routine.
Fall rehearsal schedule means I'm at work 60 hours Monday-Friday, plus whatever happens on Saturday. Even so, I'm home for dinner two days a week. Saturdays through September are family time. October is October. Sundays I don't even check my school email. Monday and Tuesday we have late rehearsal, but I'm home ASAP afterward. Sometimes the kid is already in bed by the time I get there, but at least I can see my wife.
In the spring, we divide up the sectionals so nobody has to be here both morning and evening on a given day. It's roughly 45 hours at school. All-Region week, or the week before the concert, add some time on there. Just like the fall, weekend are for family. Of course I go to All-Region events, Solo and Ensemble, etc, but I don't come up to the band hall unless we have something going on.
All of those other administrative tasks happen during the day. If I'm really backed up, I'll work on it in the evenings after dinner, but rarely. It can be done.
