I don't need to be impartial to have admin support. That isn't a thing! If you are tired of being held to a different standard then stand up and quit allowing there to be different standards. I walked into a HS job and the AP towards the end of the first year asked who was judging drum major tryouts. I said I was. They looked at me and asked why. I said because I was in charge of the band and I would select the leaders just like the coaches select the starting line up. They said it hadn't been done like that in the past. I said that's how I was doing it. The discussion ended and was never asked again. |
Make the admin have your back. We do too much whining and complaining instead of simply DOING. If you want to be treated like athletics then demand it. One of the best compliments I got from that same AP a few years later was talking about the talent in the program. They asked what I had coming up. I was able to talk about instrumentation and strengths of the program ranging from the next senior class to the 8th graders in the pipeline. I could go through each ensemble and each section. After about 20 minutes they said, you know your kids and your program better than the coaches know theirs". I said I have to because that's how we build for the future and fill in the gaps. If we don't know our weaknesses we can't fill them.
We could learn a lot from the coaches. Be like them, (the good ones). Demand support, (or the very least keep admin from interfering), and quit worrying about all the noise. My admin will have my back whether I pick the leadership or my middle school feeder picks it. Why? Because I don't give them an option.
