3C MS. Our TOTAL numbers (6-8) are in the 50's. Beginners are about mid-20's. We got hit HARD. But, it wasn't surprising considering a) most of our band kids were remote, which makes it hard to do anything including building relationships; b) we only saw the kids (at most) every other day, end even then it depended on if they were in group 1, 2, or everyday; c) choice slip went out the 3rd week of January and were were not told about it until two days before they were due (and yes, we were asking all the time when they were going out). But, the killer is when they added LEGO class...I mean "robotics" for 6th grade. It is hard to believe that just six years ago we were knocking on the door of 300 kids in band to just over 140 this year to "where the hell did my band go" next year. The strange thing is that we've eliminated all barriers to being in band. Band will literally cost you the price of a binder, dividers, and a pack of pencils, and we will even give you those if you just ask. The only thing we can't give out (district policy) is the band t-shirt. We've had more success the past six years that in the history of the program, while the other programs at the school (choir, theatre, even athletics and dance) have had little to no success (I can't remember the last time the choir, theatre, or dance class put on a program). |
So, yeah...our numbers are down and so are we (the directors).
