To call a retiree or not to call?

A fellow HS director near me has told some that they are retiring this semester.
My current position is not my favorite and I would love to transfer to their school.

Is it rude to ask them if they are indeed retiring?

If so, I feel they would recommend me for their position but I don't want to offend them. Tricky situation.

I don't see it being rude calling the person and saying, "Hey! I've heard rumors that you might be retiring." If it is true, that's you "in" to suggesting you'd be interested. If it isn't true, just go about a normal conversation. Nothing about this seems odd to me.

I would call them and inquire if this is true and if so, when is the position officially open and how to go about applying. No harm, no foul.

A phone call inquiring straight from the person is most definitely preferred IMO. Especially if you have some sort of relationship with them.

I landed a career changing position by calling a friend that was leaving a great job. I would have ended my career in this wonderful place had I not been enticed to go to the "big school world." I would say that if you are truly interested, "you can't make the shots that you don't shoot." I think that most older directors will understand what you are asking because they know the game REALLY well by this point. Just be really nice when you're asking. A couple of compliments about what they've done in small talk before asking would be a great idea. Best of luck.

Call that person and say "I am hearing rumors that you are retiring. I don't like spreading rumors, It's always best to go straight to the source. What is going on?"

Bring up retirement/COVID challenges etc.. in general in a conversation, then slide in a question like "how many more years are you going to keep at it?"
