What are some good lyrical pieces grades .5 to 2 (can be UIL or non-UIL).

I agree with all of these, but I will warn you "Where Words End" may be one of the hardest pieces on the grade 2 list. We are working on it right now and it is downright challenging. BTW, it is a great piece of music, my students and I are really enjoying it.

Two of my favorites not on the list:

Midnight Sky - Balmages .5
On Placid Seas - Sheldon 1.5

At the .5 level there's nothing better than Midnight Sky - Balmages. Amazing piece of music at that level!

A little more challenging is a piece called 'Too Beautiful for Words' by Rob Grice (I think that's the right composer)

Neither of those are on the UIL list unfortunately!

On the UIL list at the grade 1 level is In The Bleak Midwinter arr. Bullock that's a great piece to have a young JH band do.

In A Quiet Place - Bill Calhoun - UIL 2/Publisher 1.5

Check out "Best music for Beginning Band" by Dvorak/Floyd/Margolis pub. Manhattan Beach and "Teaching Music Through Performance for Beginning Band" - Both have lots of suggestions in various styles that are both UIL grade 1 and (a few) 2, and non UIL.

Granted you won't get anything new in the last 20 years, but it's a solid place to start looking for things you might already have or could easily borrow.

"In the shining of the stars" by Robert Sheldon is the best lyric piece we have ever played. Parents cryed when we dedicated it to a lost student at a school concert. Give it a read.

"A Childhood Hymn" by Holsinger is a great lyrical piece. It used to be on the Grade 2 list, but it was removed a few years ago.
