I was in this same place several years ago. |
My side business had grown to the point where I did not have to teach. I had a great job at a fine school district with a great perforce group but the opportunities, especially related to income and free time, were too promising to ignore.
I told the other band staff in December that I wouldn't be back for the new school year. I could trust these directors that they wouldn't tell my students, administrators or the general public until late May when school was almost over. Everything worked out fine and the timing was perfect. I was able to leave on great terms.
Be careful though. I would look out for myself first and not worry about telling anyone your plans until you are required to do so either by state or school district policies. In most cases, its probably better not to say anything until the last couple of weeks especially to students. It really depends on your relationship with the school, students and other directors.
The bigger issue is making 100% sure that you are indeed going to leave. Nothing would be worse than to make that call too early and have to try to pull it back.
