I wanted to post and ask what the status is on jobs in your area? Has there is a loss of jobs in Band or Fine Arts and if so, what was the reason for it?
I was just informed that our district will be voting to allow the superintendent to make job cuts and I am unsure of what that will look like. Is it something where you're warned in advance or from one day to the next you're sent bags packing?
Once you get a contract you're assured a job, UNLESS they declare financial exigency. That's where every rule goes out the window. They may make adjustments to your pay/contract details until the 45th day before school starts (same day you can get released with no penalties). Again once you pass that date they can still RIF folks (Reduction in Force) with a declaration.
The question is going to be what the state legislature does in the next months. There could also be additional funding we see from the federal government I would think. I would say that my feeling is that there will be cuts this year, but the question is how much? Generally speaking a last hired, first cut, philosophy gets used. Might be a good year to hang in where you're at for that reason. We were fortunate to be in the middle of the biennium this year. We'll see what happens in the coming months.
Most good administrators will communicate any cuts they're expecting before contracts. Unfortunately there are some that will blindside you.
Go look at your board policies and they should specify all of that information there.
If the super is making cuts to the number of CTUs then it will take affect at the beginning of next school year. You won't be out of a job tomorrow but you might be by August.
