Are these songs too similar?

I’m looking at playing Courtlandt County Festival and Big Sky Roundup. Are these too similar? I know that we are supposed to program two contrasting pieces but I can’t bring myself to taking a fully lyrical piece to contest with my group.

Play what you feel is appropriate for your group that will be educational as well as successful.

I made my first first division on stage playing a march movement from a suite and two opera overture transcriptions.

There is no rule that says the pieces you perform have to be contrasting. The only time you see that wording is when there is a mutli movement work and you don't have to play all the movements; it might say "play two contrasting movements."

As long as you perform two works off the appropriate list (or higher) and a March, you are fine. Perform what your band can perform.

There is nothing stating you need two contrasting pieces. Program what your band can play "nearly perfect" for UIL.

I look for lit. that will keep the students engaged and learning. I also take into consideration benchmarking, STAAR pullouts, athletics, etc. and try to plan intelligently. Here are some of my past UIL programs. Our groups never recieved any negative concerns/comments about the choices of music. You gotta do what you gotta to to keep the momentum going forward for the band program. No one knows your situation better than you!

not say anything about two contrasting pieces in the UIL rules.

It says to play a march of your choice and two pieces from the PML according to the guidelines of your enrollment and whether the band is varsity or non/sub-varsity.

Program and play what your band can play well.

You do not have to have contrasting pieces. That's not a thing.

Difficulty: seemingly about 75% of the playable Grade 2 list is under 80 beats a minute, expressive, and contains lots of unshaded notes.

They really need to get more pieces on that list that are not ballads.

Make a list of things you never have to worry about again, ever, and add this to it. The important things to be concerned about for a UIL performance are on a contest sheet. Three major components each with 6 indicators. Memorize these. These are the things, and the only things your band will be judged on.
