Sight Reading

I am having to take my 7th grade to concert/sight reading this year and I need some materials to get them ready. Anyone have any good stuff? I know about Sight Reading factory (My school doesn't have the right technology to be able to use that. Kids don't even have chrome books.)

Any good books I can purchase? I have the 204 progressive sight reading tunes. I need something in unison to start out with and maybe changes to 2 parts? Anything would help!

Check out The Monster Musician Reader app. It's like a sightreading factory/guitar hero hybrid. My kids love it and lesson are based on progressive rhythm reading. (similar to "teaching rhythm logically". www.themonstermusician.com

I know you said that you don't have the technology for Sightreading Factory, but you can purchase a subscription and project it. That would give you unlimited examples. Obviously there are issues trying to project a full band score AND students reading. But I'm sure you can work around that.

back in the day, as an undergrad, my private teacher told me if I wanted to improve my "sight" reading skills, just to read everything I saw. Songs from a Hymnal, piano books, everything that I could get my hands on. As an educator, I have maintained that same attitude. I try to read something new every day, even if it's from a technique book or a short piece. The beauty of the prepared sight reading collections is the consistency between instruments and parts.

If you have RhythmBee, their wind studies make for great sight reading exercises. Also see if your school has the past Sight Reading pieces and use those to practice. You will need to practice the explanation periods for both the kids and yourself.

Try the "Sight Reading 101" books by Ed Huckeby... They are published by C.L.Barnhouse company.....

...I started using this series when they first came out. With my 8th grade band, the SR rating went up 3 ratings in one year (took over a Grade A raging dumpster fire).

There is a 201 & 301 set of books in the series, but if you're doing a 7th grade group the 101 set is going to have plenty for them to do. In fact, you probably won't get through the 101 book with 7th graders until you've got the JH program going the way you want it.
