Cold Weather

As most of us are having cold weather this week (and rain on Wednesday) how would you go about scheduling practices for Area this weekend? No indoor practice facility at our school. ):

I would go ahead and have outside practice. We are in the far north panhandle and the week of Area for us it was in the upper 20's all week. We just bundled up and rehearsed. Just don't worry about the tuning too much...for sure don't make major adjustments if its not going to be that cold for your performance. Kids are tough, mind over matter.

What material is used in your kids' uniforms?

What is the under-uniform?

Do you do an indoor warm-up?

Mind over matter... sure... but standing outside for a couple of hours, holding on to a freezing piece of metal is not really fun. When it's 20 degrees outside.

Trust me, I'm from the north and I've played in weather much like what you're describing. But we were allowed to wear winter coats over our uniforms in our college marching band sections. It was a different scenario. HS didn't compete in December.

Congratulations on making it to Area. You must be new to this so rest assured ,it really is simple. You rehearse outside unless it is raining. Cutting it short will help with morale but the students need to understand that they may have to march in 40 - 50 degree temps.

You can also do an indoor rehearsal and teach them how to prepare for the tuning nightmares that will occur with cold temps.

Depending on your show, you might be able to split brass and ww inside and outside then bring them out together for a full run.

Not original poster, but it's going to be in the 20-30's out here in West Texas... all the more reason this delayed timing of contest is a joke!

I've thought all along this could be bad for South Texas even (actually looks okay this weekend and next), but knew you all were in for some frigid contests... let alone rehearsals! Best wishes to everyone. I remember we had an area day that it was 39 degrees here a few years ago and it was a nightmare for tuning. (Only two of us from the first ten bands made finals that night!)

Keep the warm air going through those horns, wrap hands around mouthpieces, etc. Triple check slides move before you get there because you'll probably get the joy of having most of them all the way in!

At least your kids might have dealt with cold though, so they may not be the complete wimps our kids are down here. 50 degrees = winter coats are out!

Not being a jerk. But I would go outside and rehearse. Be prepared, dress warm. Cut it short if you have to. Start inside if you have to. Do a run through and go home.
