Are you having a concert or not. The rise locally and broad is making me question plans

Not a chance. I won’t be responsible for a super spreader in my community. We are just doing basic melodies or pieces to record and send to their parents.

If volleyball can play indoors and basketball about to start playing indoors....both with spectators, then why can't we? Why do our kids have to suffer with missing out on things when the athletes get to continue practicing and playing?
Yes we need to be safe and guidelines, but nothing from the state says an indoor concert is prohibited. And if my district wanted us to cancel, I would remind them of what all they are allowing on campus.

There is an order of magnitude of difference between having 12 volleyball girls on the court playing and breathing, or 10 basketball players, than there is of having *fifty* band members putting MORE air than either sport through their instruments in a MORE enclosed and tightly packed space. Even if you factor the players on the bench, and the coaching staff, you're talking at MOST 15 people per team, counting trainers (who are masked), coaches (who are masked), bench players (who should be masked), and scorers (who should be masked). That's 30-35 (counting officials) people for an ENTIRE game/match - and you likely have more than that PER SONG. Sitting still.

There is also MUCH more space in an open gym than there is on a typical stage in an auditorium. Unless you're willing to have gym fans circulating the air out into the audience, you're getting MUCH more recirculation of air and aerosols in a band setting than you are in athletics.

Oh - and that's 50 players in ONE ensemble. How many bands will perform at your concert? Two? Three? Four? How many beginners do you have? Can you distance all of them safely?

And also consider that 100% of your kids will likely be UNMASKED while playing those instruments and making that concert happen. You'll have 50 unmasked individuals in the same place at the same time (well, a few less if you can get your drummers to keep their masks on) as opposed to the 10-12 that are unmasked at any one time in athletics. That's at least four times as many potential exposures.

Don't even bring audience/fans into it - as a state mandate, audience members and fans are supposed to be distanced, masked, and at 50% or less capacity. If your district isn't doing that, that's on them, not you.

If you truly don't understand the difference, please, seriously, actually ATTEND a basketball game or a volleyball game before you throw metaphorical stones. Count the participants.
Please don't bring up "well, athletics gets to" as a reason to your admin because it's not an equal comparison. Given the data and research on how COVID spreads, our activity is MUCH LESS SAFE than sports and has a much higher potential to be a "super spreader" event if you insist upon holding a concert of this type, especially with the outbreak numbers the way they are.

You know masks aren't miracles correct? If they were we wouldn't be having such large "spikes" and don't tell me it's because of the people not wearing them because every store I am in everyone is masked. heck, I see people masked in their own cars alone. That said, I wear mine when I can't maintain 6' of space but you talk like masks make the difference for sports when in reality they probably don't.

There is also a LOT less air coming out the end of a horn, (except for flute), than those basketball players bouncing off of each other and breathing heavily from exertion....

You do know a mask doesn't prevent you from getting sick, right?

It prevents YOU from getting OTHER PEOPLE sick.

If EVERYONE (and you're lying if you say everyone is masked in stores, it's simply not true) wore a mask, it would reduce the rate of transmission by a significant factor.

when you breathe out with no mask, your air goes everywhere.

When you breathe in with OR without a mask, you breathe the air around you.

When you breathe out with a mask, the air is kept CLOSE to you as it can't travel as far.

That's why they recommend distancing and recirculating the air - and keeping doors and windows open. It keeps fresh, cleaner air coming in to your mask so you're less likely to breathe in virus particles from someone else.

It's pretty simple. So you're not sick. Great! Are you sure? Remember, COVID's got a 5-14 day incubation period that may be entirely asymptomatic.

Are you sure 100% of the people you come into contact with daily aren't sick?

If EVERYONE wore a mask when out and about, and maintained distancing, we'd nearly eliminate the transfer of this disease. Science has PROVEN this.

All it takes, though, is one sick self-absorbed unmasked twunt in close contact to disperse the sickness across a large group. That's literally how this entire quarantine, distancing, and virology thing works.

Your point about basketball players breathing more may be valid or not valid - but it's immaterial. Just take COURT size. A standard high school basketball court is 84 by 50 feet. That's 4200 square feet for 12 people at a time. Each person has 350 square feet of space without even thinking three-dimensionally.

But wait - they aren't spread out that far, you say! Fine. Say they're all compressed in a quarter of that space. 87.5 sq feet per person. And that counts refs, EVERYONE. And again, the ceiling in my gym is 25 feet off the ground. If you add three-dimensional space it gets even bigger.

My band hall is 56 feet long by 40 feet wide. That's about half the size - 2240 square feet. If I have 50 people playing in my band hall, that's (about) *45* square feet of space per person.

But wait again! We don't fill the entire band hall! We sit in about half of it. Cut the space in half - now everyone only gets 22.5 square feet. And we have a 16 foot ceiling to boot.

Consider, also, that the walls in said basketball court aren't located directly next to the court they way they are in the band hall. A basketball court is MUCH bigger, with MUCH more open space and with MUCH BETTER AIR CIRCULATION. Risk of virus transmission is MUCH lower in a basketball environment than in a band hall, period.

I know we all want band to be "back to normal" but the fact is, simply, IT'S NOT SAFE.

I'm just going to move right past the lying comment. We must be in different stores because the places I go people are wearing a mask.

And I'll get to the mask and distancing would eliminate the spread of this virus comment to because reality would say that the hypothesis is false.

So let's look at things with some logic - Europe locked down the hardest and is having a resurgence. Most of the US locked down and yet, come fall there is a resurgence. BTW - how many deaths from flu have we had to date compared to last year? Just wondering. So do lockdowns work? Well obviously when you hide away the virus can't spread but realistically how long can that last and you can't lock everyone down and certainly not forever so at some point, you will come in contact with it. Plus nearly everyone is now saying that kids need to be in school, not on a computer.

Now, to the mask discussion, (again there are scientists that can prove they do and don't work), the overwhelming majority of people are wearing masks when out and yet, we are seeing an increase in cases. So why aren't the masks working? And don't tell me the 1 person out of 20 I see in a store is the reason for the spread because the numbers don't add up.

Gonna throw out another logic example - was at an event several weeks ago. Mostly outside with several hundred people in attendance, some in close proximity for a period of time. Not a mask in sight. And not a super-spreader event. Now I know that outside matters but surely there would have been an outbreak at this event, except there wasn't.

You do you and have your fun with math. The logical, reality based approach is simply, ramming into each other repeatedly playing basketball is much more intimate contact than I have ever had sitting in a rehearsal or performance. Remember, those 10 basketball players are sometimes ALL within 10 feet of each other. Meanwhile the flute player is only near 2 or 3 other people at that range. Plus, they are stationary so the flute player is guaranteed to only be in contact with a few, consistent people that they have been in close contact with for months as opposed to that traveling team that invaded the gym. Distance matters like you said. So the percussionist in the back of the room isn't impacted nearly as much by the saxophone player on the second row as you would like us to believe.

Look - I'm all for sports resuming and am glad they are. I am all for the many number of things that have resumed now that the science has finally shown they should. And I really don't understand the "shut it down at any cost" mentality of some people who are willing to cost people health and jobs and whatever else and for what? When your job goes away, just remember whose fault it was. The coaches are pushing to show they still matter and can function. What are you doing to show your community you are worth the money they spend on your program? They might decide you aren't when all is said and done.

our breathing is more dangerous than athletes sweating, breathing, bleeding and touching each other? How often is the ball cleaned? Not to mention inviting other schools to sweat and breathe on you. I guarantee that my band hall is cleaner than the gym floor.
And since when is a mandate a law.....a ticket-able offense? Not all spectators follow the mask or distance mandate.
The concert would be with kids who are around each other everyday, audience members spaced out and at 50% capacity.
Even when the whole state was deciding on summer camps, we chose to have camp because the community and kids knew athletic camps were happening. No way around it.

How often does their sweat get from one to another? Do they roll around on the floor with each other? Your argument is invalid.

Speaking of the floor, they wipe it down regularly before, during, and after the game. When sweat or fluids get on it, they have to STOP the game to clean them up. You're 100% sure that the floor of your room is cleaner than that? I guarantee it isn't. Your argument is still invalid.

How often do athletes bleed during a game? And if they do, aren't you aware that they are REQUIRED to come out of the game until they're no longer bleeding? Again, your argument is invalid.

Are they wrestling the ball into the ground? From each other? In volleyball? They're TOUCHING it for a moment at a time, and yes, they ARE swapping out game balls and sanitizing them frequently. Again, HAVE YOU GONE TO A GAME to watch? Your argument remains invalid.

And your athletes are likely screened daily for symptoms, held out of practice if they're symptomatic, and ordered to go get tests if that occurs. Just like everyone was/is for marching band. But regardless - there are FEWER people involved in sports than in band. Period. You simply CANNOT compare a 12 person team to a 50 member band. Your argument, once again, is invalid.

You're saying "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" and you're not going to change your mind. Fine. I've listed the reasons you're wrong, and you insist upon being right. Sounds like the occupant of the Oval Office. Good luck to you, and I hope no one in your community gets sick.

I guess you were never in athletics growing up, or never watched a basketball game. BTW, my band hall is sprayed 5 times a day with an electro-static misting machine and yes we spray the floor.

Varsity basketball 2 years of high school and played for 9 years growing up. Try again.

Do you have carpet? Then your floor is dirtier than a gym floor, full stop. If you have tile, your floor is likely AS clean as gym floor, but you still get more spit, dirt, dust, and trash on it than a gym on any given day.

Well maybe we played basketball in a different time frame than each other. Basketball has the most fluid transfer of any sport. Posting up on someone, sweat transfer and breathing, going for a rebound, sweat and breathing, someone gets cut on a rebound somehow, blood (before the officials see it), sweat and breathing transfer. So "your argument is invalid". My wife is a coach and I attended many volleyball games this year and have already been to a handful of basketball games. There is all kinds of fluid transfer going on. Basketball has to be the most "dangerous" if you want to be honest. Never once during any of the games are they wiping down the floors from the freshman game through varsity. I would put my band hall's cleanliness against any classroom in my school because my program is under a close critical eye at my school from almost every angle. You really didn't have to take the A-hole approach to answering his questions/concerns.

Melody lines, accompaniments that I've loaded to our Youtube channel, a few pieces with the stock recording also available on Youtube to play along with.

I've been lecturing also on a healthy dose of "things can't be as they were, but we can still do something AWESOME that will mean something to family - even from a distance or a Zoom"

Stream it once at a set time. You technically can't hand out a URL for people to listen at any time.

Send out a date/time it will be streamed and if they want to listen they must log in to watch it at that time.

Ours will be outdoors with spectators in a parking lot, masked, distanced and away from staff/performers. Students are sat far apart and the concert will be fairly short. However, if things get really bad there is a chance we do not have the concert. So far its been fine.
