Hello YB,

We have a few Trombones whose triggers are permanently broken and the parts are no longer made. What do you do with your instruments that are no good anymore? Is there anyone that buys junk instruments for parts?

I’d make sure about that. If there’s still no solution to repairing them, then see if the repair shoot will give you repair credit for them. Most usually keep old parts around.

If the trombones are quality instruments, other trigger mechanisms can be adapted to fit.

Blessing B-88 with mechanical linkage can be rebuilt with parts that fit Bach 42b. I found that parts online; my local repair guy (not in Texas) would not touch it unless I customized to a mini ball linkage.

I agree with DesertJazz... you should get a second opinion on the repairs. Machining parts for a trombone trigger is pretty basic and any quality repair shop should be able to perform this service. Sounds like yours might be more interested in selling you new trombones?

Depends on what the trombone is? We had a pile in our instrument room that one music store told us were completely unrepairable. Hillje Music began doing business with us and their brass repairman is a magician! I ended up going from no working triggers, to having a nice stock of quality trigger trombones to use. (Cost me much less than buying new ones) Terry, their technician, often is able to machine parts if they're not available anymore. Might be worth a second opinion on them?

Otherwise remember instruments are district inventory and your district has protocols/policies in place for disposal. Speak with your business office. You might be able to trade for scrap value to Second Hand Band or something? I have about 70 trombones sitting in our junior high instrument room that I need to do something with at some point. For some reason our district has practically collected them over the years!
