Run Clock Run

Ok, something threw me for a loop at Friday's game.... |
We are a 2A school,
We scored early in the 3rd quarter to make the score 58-0. By early, I mean we kick off to start the 2nd half, and with 11:30 still on the clock we get a pick 6.
Since it is 3rd quarter break, I figure I can slip over to the band hall (right next to the stadium) and use the restroom.
I was at the band hall for maybe 5-6 minutes, and when I step back out, it is already the 4th quarter! At least the band was back in time and ready to go to play the fight song one more time (we ended up winning 66-0).
I asked if the scoreboard was right, and the principal said, "yes, they're using a 'running clock'."
Now I know that in 1A there are rules regarding the clock when the score is really one-sided, but I was not aware that any other class did this.
Can anyone shed some light on this...or have I just gone nuts?
BTW, the band informed me that since I was late from 3rd quarter break, I lose it for next week's game
