I've had it with the blatant disrespect from the "leadership" at the school. My assistant and I have been at the school since it opened 15 years ago. We've put EVERYTHING we had into the program and the school. In return, we've BEGGED for a 2nd permanent place to teach so we can split up our bands like other 3C schools can do. Heck, our sister school has three rooms to go to. Instead we've had to teach on the stage, the hallway, and an old weight room. About five years ago we were promised the old weight room would become ours permanently as a new one was being built. Enter a new principal the next year and that went out the window. In fact, we couldn't use it for all of our classes because the coaches needed it those periods to workout during their conference period. Yes, you read that right. We couldn't use it for student learning because adults had to use it to exercise on school time. We do have a small (14'x18') "ensemble room" that we've used for some instruction, but lately it has been our percussion storage room because we don't have any other place to put the larger instruments, but we also use it for percussion to practice during class. It is OUR room. Has been for 15 years. It shares a door with the choir room, but no choir director has used it except for the first year to send occasionally unsupervised kids in there when we were not using it (guess how that worked out). |
Fast forward to today when the choir teacher (new to the school) came in and told me that that the room has always been the choir's and that she was going to use it to store the Wenger choir risers (which she claims are not choir risers) and some other stuff she doesn't want in there. What the F---! It's NEVER been the choir's room. My assistant I literally discussed today trying to put some of the few beginners we have showing up in the room during class some we could at least split up woodwind and brass. Now we can't. The choir director apparently went to the principal and school secretary and asked for the room and was given the room. She was even told it was hers all along. This was decided last week an I was told TODAY! The principal (when I asked about it after school) tried to talk around it and play ignorant.
- Have fought for more space TO TEACH for 15 years
- Choir teacher after 8-weeks is given a room that has been ours since the doors opened FOR STORAGE
- Wasn't notified or consulted by anyone of the change
- Principal in denial over it
I am done with this place. We keep getting less and less respect from the "leaders" yet they keep telling us how awesome we are. They've screwed us over on the schedule (no like instrument classes, kids denied the opportunity to be in band, directors having different conferences and having to teach non-music classes - like the remedial math "class" I have to do). They've prevented us from recruiting. They've added requirement and requirement by finding loopholes in the TEC and we are also not getting our our full conference period allotment (either by day or 2-week time frame). There is a total lack of respect for the teachers. When I complained to my department head (like we are supposed to do) I got told by an administrator I shouldn't do that. The room issue is just the last straw. "The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!"
