As much as those things may make our lives easier, I don't think they'll be of benefit long term. Just addressing the home games only issue. Where I grew up in NM in the Mid-80's bands stopped traveling to away games. If you look at bands up until then around the state they had numbers that were right up there with Texas bands participation wise. By the time I graduated high school in 2000 there were still some large bands, but if you look at the percentage it's way fewer kids participating. I went to College in Ohio where there's also a tradition of going to away games that's pretty consistent there. Bands there have stayed pretty big too compared to my home state. |
I really think there's a big correlation in that traveling to away games ending, and the band support falling. There's something to the competitive spirit that communities have in all aspects of the Friday night lights. Being able to say that your band sounds better, or they're bigger, or their show is more fun than the others is something a lot of communities place pride in. As a consequence they'll give you some more budget money, another staff member, or help in scheduling needs.
This year I do feel it's safer to do home games only, and we're observing that for our season, but we'll be back to away games next year for certain. My kids miss the away games a lot, and I hate that they're missing out on that this year. We believe it's the right move though for their health and our communities health.
