My school starts band in 5th grade. Before I was able to hire a second director, I had all of the kids in one class (about 45 kids) and taught flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. I added saxophone and french horn in 6th grade. Since hiring a second director, we've dropped percussion from 5th grade, but added saxophone. One of us teaches the woodwind class, the other teaches the brass kids. |
The younger you can get kids in the band hall, the better. I once heard someone say about being a stay-at-home mom "The days are long, but the years are short". Teaching band with younger kids is the same way. You'll be worn out at the end of the class, but they are extremely excited to be a part of it.
