I know there is a tremendous amount of anxiety about this school year. I have been there, too. I just want to post this as something positive. |
I am genuinely excited to start this school year. I don't have all the answers, like how to start beginner band kids online. But I am really looking forward to seeing my kids and giving them a fun, positive class to look forward to as we start the year online.
I want to encourage my fellow band directors. How would you teach your class if you never had to worry about UIL? This pandemic has been a very good reminder of why we should really be teaching music. We can challenge kids and give them purpose through music and through fostering team and community thinking.
We all have our concerns, but I want to suggest we work through our 5 stages of grief as quickly as possible. Let's embrace "acceptance" so that we can meet our kids with a smile on our face and give them some hope and joy in a difficult time. There is a lot of unrest in this country, and it is important that we grow as a nation through this, but I feel like the kids are the ones who are most often left out of the discussion and even forgotten. Let's show the kids that we care about them and that we are always happy to see them.
I pray all of you have a safe and life-changing year of teaching. Have a great start to your year!
