For the past five years. The counselor we've had the past five years places band kids last and does it because it is easier for her. We literally went from having 100% heterogeneous classes one year to complete mixed classes the next. Coincidentally, the numbers began to drop dramatically every year since. We went from nearly 200 beginners the year before she arrived to only 60 this year. Every year has been lower than the year before. 60 beginners isn't bad...unless you are a large 3C. But, we also have kids who a) are placed in the wrong 7th & 8th grade band classes top band kids in the bottom band and vica versa) b) kids who can't be in band due to scheduling (not for special classes, just because she can't make a schedule) c) kids that are put in beginner band that don't want band and can't change (we've become a dumping ground). Couple that with no FAD but a HS director who doesn't know what he is doing and won't fight for anything or stand up to the administration and it is a miracle that we get first divisions. |
