As tired as we are, as band directors.. |
Imagine the parents of our kids. They're told one thing, then something else, then something else every two to three days. Because people in Austin are playing politics, they're having to completely uproot their lives every few days to plan again how to get their kids in school.
Add to that the kids themselves. In some cases, those kids have been isolated since mid-March. They have no idea when or if they'll go back to class - or see their friends, which, realistically, is 75% of what kids go to high school for. Their entire lives have been completely altered by this virus. Yes, some have ignored shelter in place orders, but in many cases, kids have lost a ton of what makes high school exactly that - high school.
Imagine our administration and district leadership. In mid-July, the plan coming from the state level was "open at the normal time" so they planned and prepared for that with an online option.
Then Devos and the DoE say "no funding unless you open in person" - new plan, then a few days later "well, you can have funding" ..
Then county governments shut down major metro areas.
Then the governor guarantees funding, so schools shift to an online only option for safety. UIL then issues directives with this guidance, which changes things for band directors specifically.
Now an felony indicted attorney general who has somehow never gone to trial for his corruption charges (he was indicted FIVE YEARS AGO) unilaterally revokes local health authorities' ability to make decisions.
And a SBOE president who has never set foot in a classroom and who has a stated goal to destroy traditional public education in favor of private schools and charters now says "no funding if not in person."
In the past two-three weeks, yes, it's been stressful for us, but consider that in the past two weeks, the narrative of what is allowed/acceptable has changed more than half a dozen times, and so long as politics are continued to be played, this isn't going to get better.
I predict a court injunction against the AG's order/Morath's directives to be placed by the end of the business day tomorrow, and this will continue to play out.
