First, I suggest you take emotions out of the approach to this thinking (please don't read that as an attack; I had to do that in order to understand this better). My initial response was very much like you think. However, you have to keep a few things in mind: |
- Parents/Students are making the decision for remote vs. face-to-face for various reasons. You can't assume they all have the same reasons.
- One could look at activities that take place outside as being safer than those that take place indoors. I'm not going to argue any of that; again, that's for individuals to decide.
- Only coming to school for a certain activity would mean much less exposure to the virus.
- If a course has a "lab" component (something that must be done in a face-to-face setting, can you deny access to that course (and thus the component) simply because they chose remote learning?
Personally, I don't like the idea of going back to face-to-face anytime soon. I would much rather teach in a remote setting until this thing is under better control. I don't have that option. But, my students do. And if some fill remote is safer, but they still want to participate in activities that require them to come to campus, I think I can be on board.
