Band is a fully curricular, TEKS-based, academic enrichment Fine Arts course. As such, it is a component of the required curriculum per the Texas Administrative Code. However, Marching Band is an extra-curricular "activity" that is associated with "curricular" Band. You might try to make the case that the TEKS do include performance as one of the student objectives. Also, a credit in Fine Arts is required for graduation. |
To its credit, TEA is still requiring that the TEKS be delivered and mastered in the course. Hopefully your decision makers can be approached with this in mind, with the goal of not depriving "on-line"students the opportunity for this experience. Hopefully the parents and administrators that "get it" can get behind your efforts to provide a safe environment for on-campus learning for the performing arts courses for the students who are otherwise "online only" for the core classes! Make the case for the curriculum, social collaboration, and skill development...not contests!
