I told my kids I would be taking it week-by-week in the hopes that someone at the state would make a decision here for us since our coach has continued with workouts. I cancelled this weeks events, and will be cancelling next weeks as well. We're next door to Nueces who has issued the same September 7th order of others, so I'm guessing we'll get that in the next few days too. |
Honestly with testing numbers showing 1:46 in the Corpus area having cases, or up to 1:8 according to the health department, we're looking at near certain odds of 100 people getting together and having at least 1 or 2 being a positive case. If one of those spreads to even one other person who sees an at-risk parent, grandparent, or maybe even a healthy person and dies... Is band worth that? (My answer is a firm 'NO')
From a practical standpoint word is that UIL has said they'll be making an announcement on Monday. Even if they don't shut down UIL across the state, our first game is versus a school that will be shut down with the current order. You have to have 3(?) weeks of practice in Football before being able to play a game. We won't have that game even if we don't stop our sports. Most coaches have begun acknowledging football isn't going to happen this fall - or at least will be starting much later. I think the only reason music hasn't officially called off our events is because they won't if football doesn't.
Although the official line is 'As long as in-person school is allowed, UIL events will continue.' For much of the state the first part of that is no longer valid.
