Regarding Baroque vs. German, you definitely want to choose Baroque. This is by far the most common system here in US schools. It's also the preference of professional recorder teachers and performing musicians internationally. The German system, with the enlarged F hole, was designed to make things slightly easier on students by offering a simplified F fingering. But it comes at the cost of making other fingerings more complicated as you try to keep the recorder in tune, and ultimately, it just doesn't work well. It's difficult to find professional recorders with the German system. I create Recorder Karate practice software, and I almost never receive teacher requests for German system support in my fingering displays. |
Kids can pick up the forked fingering for the low F without too much trouble. The biggest challenge is just getting all of the low holes covered properly with the pads of their fingers. But they need to do that for the low C through E anyway, and a little bit of extra practice with the F isn't a bad thing at all.
