We have been taking a “Choose Your Own Adventure” approach, essentially giving the kids a choice between 3 or 4 activities (we call them “tracks”) that will strengthen their musical muscles. Most of them are really enjoying it, learning new things that will make them better musicians. |
“Which track will you choose?”
- Track 1: Theory - using Noteflight Learn, which has lots of prebuilt lessons and templates to get kids writing music and understanding foundational concepts.
- Track 2: Ear Training - using Trainer.ThetaMusic.com/en which is a freaking AWESOME website/app out of Japan. VERY interactive, fun, and competitive.
- Track 3: Performance - depending on instrument availability, either work through songs on Smartmusic, or learn how to write and mix your own music with a combo of Noteflight and Soundtrap. Soundtrap is a big hit and can incorporate recording their instrument playing into it. It also has a ton of prebuilt lesson templates as well as a plethora of tutorial videos.
Even though we are almost done with this school year, the very real chance of having to do more online school like this in the Fall makes me glad I went to these lengths to make so many lessons (3-4 lesson videos and assignments per week using this model).
Now I feel more prepared if I need to implement some kind of all-online curriculum in the fall.
Feel free to take a look at what we have done and beg/borrow/steal what you find useful:
