There are now studies happening, (and Denmark I believe has done research), into whether or not kids are as contagious as adults. Once that study comes out we will have a lot more answers. If they find kids are not actually good carriers or the virus and that they also don't have complications, (which they already know), then you might see a more normal school year than you think.
Regarding sports - the NCAA will find a way for football to happen. They need the money. If they make it work then high schools will make it work. ATM, Tech, and Baylor have already said they are planning for on-campus classes and sports.
is to be ready for anything and everything to change. There will be nothing normal about this next school year. Everything right now our on side of things is speculation until the people with pay grades above us make decisions and tell us how things will be.
From what I am hearing 6 foot distancing is the biggest plan. My wife was told (elementary music) 1/2 students on a an A/B schedule, students will stay in the classroom all day. No lines because the little ones won't keep 6 feet apart. Lunch in the classroom, music/PE/art in the classroom, etc.. Sounds like what we have seen released by the CDC for education guidelines. No field trips-so what does that mean for band transportation, games, contest, etc.? Home games only with students meeting at the stadium with 6 ft spaces between students? For Allen HS and bands over 100(random number), does that mean band is split up between different games? Who knows? Nothing-Nothing will be the same.
Be ready for anything. Don't expect band class, schedule, or anything about it to be the same. For all us band director Type A personality, control freaks this will be a challenging year.
My assistant and I were texting about our school calendar. He has heard some chatter of some schools starting 2 weeks earlier than normal. That will allow an extended Christmas break, or a winter break in January or February to offset potential school closures due to Corona or some other sickness. The number of school days would stay the same. It would be a kind of floating 2 week holiday to be placed as needed.
I told him I don't believe that would happen. He then reminded me that we usually have a school calendar approved and emailed out during the week after spring break. Our school board is now a month and a half over due for voting on a school calendar. I wonder if they are considering it?
Anyone heard any talk of this? It makes sense for attendance, but it would be tough to plan for S&E and C/SR.
