I got my degree in sociology (to graduate more quickly), did an ACP for music while teaching band my first year. Also took and passed the ELAR and Social Studies tests. After the ACP, I'm certified to teach all three. If you're certified to teach with a standard teaching license, you can test in any subject and be certified to teach it. |
That said, I taught English for a year when my wife took a job in another part of the state, and I couldn't find a band gig. Biggest regret of my life. Left me traumatized, nearly broken, and I still have literal nightmares of the experience.
The next year, I did what I should have done in the first place, which was take a band job (or stay where I was) even though it meant living apart from my wife for a year. It wasn't easy, but I was a different person, a better person, than I was the year before. Neither of us regret the decision, and now I'm at a school where we live under the same roof and have about the same 15-minute commute to work. I will never teach another subject again, not because of the bad experience, but because it doesn't align with my career goals and won't help me get to where I want to be by the time I retire.
