You should be okay leaving this position whenever you feel ready. Iím even going to suggest, the sooner the better. Since you are trying to get back into band and out of elementary, your position is stronger now than if you wait.
Itís okay to test the waters in different directions, and you can even come off stronger this way. Putting a different perspective on your career is often extremely enlightening. If you come back to band with even stronger convictions, this can work in your favor if you position yourself that way.
My advice is to be sure that you prepare answers to questions specifically related to why you left and why you want to come back, focusing on how the experience positively affected you as an educator.
What skills did you develop?
What weaknesses did it highlight that you can/did work on?
What do you know now that can help you in a new position?
How has this experience shaped your philosophy?
