If you've got 3 extras, why not add one to your top band and two to your bottom band? Why do all three extras have to go into your second band? |
If you have 20 altos and 3 bands, split them 6/6/8, and encourage some to switch to tenor or bari.
There's no rule that says you have to have exactly 50 kids in a "50 piece band." Plus, you cannot guarantee that you'll have all of the altos you intend in your ensembles - some may move, some may quit for college credit classes.
In a 50 piece band, assuming you have no double reeds and horns, I'd go with:
With double reeds, you're adding four kids to the group (two on each) - drop a flute, a sax, a baritone, and either a trumpet or a trombone, depending upon which was the stronger remaining group of kids.
