It takes brass players (physically) longer than woodwinds on lines because we have muscles that need to be built. I always refer to my analogy: If someone who doesn't normally lift weights wants to lift 100lbs, they will start with 5 pounds and gradually add more. It just takes us brass players to build the muscles needed for "high notes". As far as technicality goes, they "should" be able to do rhythms that the woodwinds can do. I mean my low brass are killin' it right now with eighth notes and sluring. All that to say it just depends on the kids skill levels. |
Hey, Yellowboard thinktank! How far, technically, should brass be behind woodwinds at this point in the year for beginners? I have woodwinds who are now able to tackle any number in the book (Essential Elements), while my brass are stuck in the 80s. We have homogeneous groups. I'm a drummer, so I'd like your honest thoughts on this.
