Back when I was Young & Stupid, I subscribed to the "40 Hour Work Day" (yes, day). At my very first region meeting, I met another director who was very well respected, and successful. After talking with him and he went to take care of other things, some of the other directors mentioned, "He works a 4A band program by himself, goes to SMC all the time, HB finalist several times over, gets Sweepstakes without breaking a sweat...and always goes home at 4 unless it's game-day. We don't know how he does it." |
Well, after 3 years of the 40 Hour Work Day, with little to show for it, I decided to call this director up and ask him for advice. He invited me to come watch his rehearsals for the day. While watching him do his classes, I was saying to myself, "I never thought of that", more than once. He also showed me how to do my paperwork more efficiently. And...as usual the day was done at 4.
Now, I don't feel worn down at the end of the day, I'm actually ahead of the paperwork, my bands are playing better, getting 1s, and I'm heading home in about 5 minutes (it's 3:55 as I type this), which is my usual time.
