While I agree that there have been very loose interpretations of a march, and that you should contact your region executive secretary, I will add that I remember a school receiving a DQ one year. I was not at the contest but in looking at the results on TexasMusicForms.com I noticed that all three selections listed were on the PML and none of them were a march style. I hypothesize that they were DQ'd for not meeting the criteria, but I have no proof as I was not at the contest or privy to any other information. |
My understanding with 28 years of teaching and as a member of TMAA for concert band is that is should be a march style, but can be any march in any march style... British, Spanish, American, whatever... as long as it is a march. If your band were to play a waltz, overture or any thing other than a march, I would report it to the person running the contest and let them decide what to do with the information.
