If this is a top band that for some reason has only one horn, maybe you should be making this choice. If you only have one horn, and they can't handle the range of 1st part, I'm guessing this is a lower band. Consider playing pieces that don't have more than 1 (or at most 2) horn part. |
If I were dropped into your situation and had to play that piece, I would probably distill the 4 horn parts into one that the kid can play, and give him that. While I'm at it, I would re-write anything in the other parts that I really need into saxophones or maybe trombones depending on what it is and what tone quality I need there.
Say you only have one horn in your group. Do you always give them 1st horn or select a part more in their range? I sometimes double or cover horn parts with saxophones as well. If you have to omit horn parts, which ones do you cut?
