Not a horn layer, but when I was in high school (waaay back) I got my braces off two days before region tryouts. When I got home and picked up my tuba, my lips refused to buzz and no sound came out at first. I practiced many many of those next 48 hours just to get it back. When you have braces, the lips are somewhat stretched out and the embouchure muscle memory is different, so there's no easy, quick answer. I would think it might be a bit more difficult for a French horn player. The lips will shrink back to normal pretty quickly, but two days is pushing it. (I did get first chair, but there were not that many good tuba players 50 years ago.) Best of luck to your horn player.|
