Some people say a silver horn will sound "brighter." Some claim it's "darker." Scientific studies have been done that show the difference between lacquer and silver is purely cosmetic, and has no discernible effect on sound. It's purely aesthetics (and usually price, but apparently not at the moment). |
Over time, silver can look better, with frequent cleaning. If you're looking for a school horn that may get dented and damaged, silver survives the repair better. Lacquer cracks and splits during dent repair, or can burn during a solder repair. Silver stretches with the dent and goes back into place. However, silver more quickly shows fingerprints and grease, and of course can tarnish. All of that is fixable with some elbow grease and maybe some silver polish.
