Alternate assignment for missed performances

Long story short....kid misses several performances due to dad holding him out because of low grades in other classes. I’m being told I HAVE to give him an alternate assignment to cover the same TEKS.

Suggestions?

If it's an assignment to make up for several performances, I'd assign a solo from the UIL PML that's appropriate for his playing level. Preferably, one that you have a recording of the accompaniment to have him play along with for his makeup grades.

I had a big problem with this several years ago. I made the kids who missed come up to the front and play their part for the class while the other students wrote glows and grows for them. I read all the student writing and threw away any mean comments, and gave the students an honest grade based on how they played. I took points off because it was "late" but other than that I graded as I would a test. Three of those kids dropped next year and the rest never missed another concert.
